ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC LOCALIZATION OF ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE IN PAPILLA FOLIATA

Abstract
The localization of the enzyme has been studied under an RCA-EMU 3D electron microscope using material from the rabbit''s tongue and applying different techniques. The best results were obtained when a technique after Sabatini et al (J. Cell. Biol. 17: 19, 1963) was used. Reaction product pre-cipitated on cell membranes of only the superficially situated cells among those epithelial layers which border the gutter separating two individual papillae. Rakhawy (Anat Rec. 142: 269, 1962) attributed a role in the mechanism of taste to phosphatases in cell membranes of gustatory epithelium by suggesting them to be instrumental in transport of rapid molecules across the cell membrane.
