Transsphenoidal Radiation Hypophysectomy with Gold-198

Abstract
The transsphenoidal implantation of radioactive gold (Au198) into the anterior lobe of the pituitary was carried out in 39 patients with advanced carcinoma. The radiation from 25 mc. of the isotope so applied did not achieve total destruction of the pituitary but did relieve pain in two-thirds of the patients. Evidence that vision was improved or metastasis retarded was obtained in 6 of the 39 patients.
