Abstract
Once again the leader of industry, Sir Terence Beckett, Director General of the CBI, has tried to make us aware of the importance of a thriving manufacturing base for our future well-being (Physics Bulletin October 1986 p422). He does not tell us that during the last seven years our manufacturing industries have been reduced to a shadow of their former selves.Keywords
