Abstract
The external quality assessment of point-of-care testing of blood glucose in 193 Ontario acute care health institutions has been carried out since 2001. Three challenge samples are distributed each year to test all glucose meters in use. Bias and imprecision rules are applied to the results for the 18 specific glucose meter models. Most results fall less than 20% from the glucometer mean. When multiple glucometers of the same model are used within an institution, then most results fall less than 15% from the site mean value for the challenge. The number of results flagged for bias has decreased since the beginning of the program. Keywords
