Abstract
The total population of the selected zone was 33,450, including 19,850 adults (9683 males and 10,167 females). The sample was formed by 1976 adults (905 males and 1071 females). The frequency of drunkenness and the frequency and duration of bouts of drinking during the last calendar year, constituted the basis of the classification criterion. Among the male population 28.5% never indulged in drunkenness; 34.9% became drunk less than 12 times a year; 28.3% were classified as periodic excessive drinkers, and 8.3% were considered alcoholics. The respective figures for females were 94.3, 4.6, 0.5 and 0.6%.Keywords
