Abstract
The antineoplastic agent, 3-ethoxy-2-oxobutyraldehyde bis(thiosemicarbazonato) Cu(II), undergoes a pseudo-1st-order decomposition in the presence of viable Ehrlich ascites mouse tumor cells. Physical and chemical methods show that the Cu is reduced in this process, thiols are involved in the reaction and the thiosemicarbazone ligand is displaced from Cu2+. The widespeard distribution of cell-bound Cu suggests several modes of cytotoxicity.
