Abstract
This brief review shows that many questions remain to be answered regarding optimal treatment of urinary tract infections. It seems imperative to design additional studies which would provide a better understanding of the natural history of urinary infections, particularly the effect of no therapy in adult patients with first episode, acute uncomplicated non-obstructed urinary infections. Such studies would exclude patients with infections during pregnancy, or in association with vesicoureteral reflux, or other urinary tract complications. Additionally, new methods need to be investigated to improve the classification of urinary infections. Precise classification would permit meaningful observations on chemotherapeutic efficacy including optimal duration of treatment of each specific type of infection. Properly designed future research efforts in these areas would not only result in much needed knowledge regarding the effect, if any, of chemotherapy on specific types of urinary infections, but would also have a major, significant economic impact on the delivery of medical care to this group of patients. Keywords
