Abstract
The metal-molecule stretch vibrational mode of CO chemisorbed on a Pt(111) surface has been studied by infrared spectroscopy. The data show that the intrinsic peak width due to vibrational damping is definitely less than 1 . Comparison is made with existing theoretical calculations on the energy relaxation of this vibrational mode by anharmonic coupling to substrate phonons or creation of electron-hole pairs.
