Abstract
Soluble-enzyme systems, free from particulate matter have been extracted from Propionibacterium shermanii and P. arabinosum by sonic disintegration of the cells. Extracts ferment glucose or pyruvate. The fermentation of glucose by P. shermanii extract is unique in that there is a net uptake of CO2- The products of fermentation of 1-C14 -glucose were isolated and degraded. The enzyme system randomizes C14 into all positions of the products. CO2 is produced from C-1 of glucose, and this may occur by some pathway addition to the Embden-Meyerhof cleavage. Keywords
