Abstract
Methods of ossicular reconstruction are reviewed from both evolutionary and pragmatic surgical standpoints. The statistical basis of evaluating hearing results was described and used in comparing techniques of reconstruction of four basic ossicular defects. Autografting and homografting with both ossicular bone and cartilage have been evaluated to aid in surgical method selection. From these experiences, principles of ossicular repair have been induced and proposed as a guide to this aspect of chronic ear surgery. Keywords
