A STUDY OF THE VARIATIONS IN ESSENTIAL OIL OF CULTIVATEDOCIMUM GRATISSIMUM

Abstract
The variation of the volatile oil content in the leaves from different locations on Ocimum gratissimum plants has been investigated. An average of 1.2 %, 0.6 % and 0.4 % of oil is reported in the top, middle and base leaves respectively. The volatile oil obtained from the leaves of the various parts investigated contained mainly thymol and no eugenol when tested using thin–layer chromatography and gas chromatography. The latter technique showed that there was little or no variation in the actual constituents of the leaf oil from different locations on the plant. Es wurde die Variabilität des Gehaltes an ätherischem Öl in Ocimum gratissimum von verschiedenen Standorten untersucht. Im Mittel enthalten die Blätter an der Spitze der Pflanze 1,2 %, in der Mitte 0,6 % und an der Basis 0,4 %. Die Hauptkomponente ist Thymol, dagegen fehlt Eugenol, wie von anderen Autoren behauptet. Der Standort hat keinen oder nur geringen Einfluß auf die Zusammensetzung des Öles.
