Abstract
A well-known graphologist rated 176 army hospital patients on a 5-point scale of neuroticism, from short essay handwriting samples. Ratings correlate significantly (r = .21) with a battery of objective tests indicating neuroticism, but do not correlate with psychiatric diagnosis. Some aspect of neuroticism does seem to show up in handwriting, but prediction from brief objective tests is much quicker and more accurate than analysis by this graphologist.
