Bacteriology and pharmacokinetics of the new amidino penicillin—mecillinam

Abstract
In a laboratory study of mecillinam we found it had higher activity against Salmonella and Shigella than obtained with ampicillin, chloramphenicol or trimethoprim. Activity was also high against other enterobacteriaceae but low against Gram-positive cocci. Blood levels showed peak levels of 5.5 μg/ml were obtained 30 min after i.m. injection and half these levels after oral administration. The blood levels we found were lower and urine recovery 50% less than those previously reported.
