Abstract
-This review discusses the amt. and conc. of arthropod blood, the micro- scopic structural elements and their functions in phagocytosis and clotting, the sp. gr. and other physical constants, and the acidity and its maintenance at constancy. The osmotic pressure and its maintenance in terrestrial and freshwater arthropods, in the estuarine crabs and in marine arthropods is reviewed. The effects on the osmotic pressure of hypotonicity, hypertonicity, and drying are considered, along with the functions of the skin in mineral metabolism. The solutes of the blood are reviewed, including minerals, which differ startlingly from mammals and from sea-water and which appear quite variable. Protein components reviewed include hemocyanin, Hb, toxic proteins, enzymes, and carotinoids. Amino acids and their high conc. blood carbohydrates, and lipids are also discussed. 387 references are included.
