Computer Processing of Pediatric Emergency Room Data

Abstract
This communication describes a rapid, uncomplicated method of coding diagnosis which is based on anatomical site, condition, and specific etiology of diseases seen most frequently in a pediatric emergency room. Significant information has been obtained with a minimum of expense and time expended. The emergency room (ER) staff has accepted the method, probably because of its simplicity. Data obtained by computer analysis of coded pediatric ER records are valuable in assessing the demography and needs of the population served, the quality of medical practice in the ER, and the temporal assignment of auxiliary personnel. Problems of data input are related to the amount of time expended by physicians and other relevant information.
