Abstract
Calculations are presented for the determination of radiation dose delivered by internally administered radioisotopes to specific tumour sites and to critical areas in the body. Some of the variables are: the metabolizing function of the isoptoe in the various sites, the half life, the beta and gamma ray energies of the isotope, and the tumor size. From this, an expression has been obtained for the ratio of dose in the critical volume and the tumor, and the effect of the various parameters on this ratio. These are used to calculate" the relative advantage of various iodine isotopes from data on 9 patients who received therapeutic doses of I131. For most patients the I isotopes having a higher beta to gamma ray energy ratio are more advantageous to use, if their half life is of the order of one day or more. I131 is probably not always the most desirable I isotope for maximal tumor and minimal critical volume irradiation. Keywords
