CHANGES IN UTERINE RNA FOLLOWING STIMULATION WITH 17β-OESTRADIOL

Abstract
RNA from non-stimulated and 17[beta]-estradiol-stimulated uteri and from livers of ovariectomized rats was extracted by a phenol procedure. The extracts were tested for biological activity in vivo by direct application on the uterine epithelium. Only extracts from hormone-activated uteri induced epithelial hypertrophy, Pre-incubation of active extracts with RNase abolished this activity, as did ether washing of the extracts. Active extracts were fractionated on a column of Sephadex G-100 gel into 3 fractions. Testing showed that hypertrophy of the epithelial cells was caused by constituents of the 2nd fraction only.
