Customs and Beliefs Relating to the Mother and Infant in an Area of Rural Andhra Pradesh

Abstract
One of the major difficulties in delivery of health care in rural areas is the cultural resistance on account of age-old superstitions and beliefs. Hence a study was undertaken in 12 villages in a rural area of Andhra Pradesh to record the customs and beliefs relating to the mother and neonate by direct observation and questionnaire. An effort was made to identify the beneficial practices and separate the innocuous practices from the harmful ones for future planning of health services in these areas.
