TiAl–SiC composites prepared by high temperature synthesis

Abstract
Synthesis of Ti, Al and SiC Powders into intermetallic composites was achieved (a) by hot press reactive sintering, (b) by self propagating, high temperature synthesis, and (c) in a differential scanning calorimeter. The Ti and Al powders reacted exothermically to form intermetallics, and the resulting mixture of phases depended on the fabrication technique used and the amount of SiC present. Addition of small quantities of SiC improved the transverse rupture stress of the composite. MST/1079
