A new method for the synthesis of furan derivatives: I. Introduction

Abstract
A new method for the synthesis of furan derivatives is outlined. By the action of a mixture of concentrated sulphuric acid and acetic anhydride in the molecular ratio of 1:2 on αβ‐ or β γ‐unsaturated ketones, having a branching of the carbon skeleton in the β‐position, δ‐sultones with two conjugated double bonds in the hetero‐ring are obtained. On pyrolysis these δ‐sultones yield sulphur dioxide and a furan derivative.
