Abstract
A monolithic eight-channel individually addressable AlGaAs laser diode array, usable in parallel data transfer optical disk memory systems, has been developed. 40 mW cw output power in the fundamental transverse mode with beam astigmatism less than 2 µm has been obtained for each of eight channels. Operating characteristics are highly uniform across the array and thermal crosstalk is of little significance. We successfully demonstrated the first four-channel parallel read operations of an optical disk using the laser diode array as a light source. Keywords
