Spectroscopic studies. Part IX. Infrared spectra and structure of some cyclobutanecarboxylic acids

Abstract
Infrared studies of cyclobutanemonocarboxylic acid, cyclobutane-1,1-dicarboxylic acid, and cyclobutane-cis-1,2-dicarboxylic acid are reported. An attempt has been made to assign most of the fundamental vibrational frequencies to normal modes of vibration and the extent of ‘hydrogen bonding’(inter- and intra-molecular association) has also been investigated in the monocarboxylic acid. Evidence is found for hydrogen bonding involving C–H bonds and for the presence of conformational isomerism in dilute solutions of the mono-acid.
