Abstract
This investigation of 39 species described by Ehrenberg under the generic name Discoplea is based on Ehrenberg's publications, his original drawings and slides, and, where possible, light- and electron microscope study of unmounted material from the Ehrenberg collection. The results show structural differences between the species decribed by Ehrenberg. One epithet, D. gracilis, however, is never mentioned by Ehrenberg in his publications or in his collection. D. undulata and D. undata are orthographic variants, D. undata having priority. Fourteen epithets are regarded as “nomina nuda”, and eight as “nomina dubia”. Nine taxa need further investigation to make positive identification possible. Discoplea astraea, D. graeca, and D. sinensis are shown to belong to the genus Cyclotella; D. atmosphaerica and D. oregonica to the genus Stephanodiscus, and D. rota and D. rotula to the genus Stictodiscus. Cyclotella comta (Basionym: Discoplea comta) has been used for so long for species other than the taxon found in Ehrenberg's material, that a formal proposal to reject this name is made; Ehrenberg's diatom has recently been described as C. notata Loseva. Keywords
