Abstract
The oxidation of nicotinic acid to 6-hydroxynicotinic acid by cell-free extracts of P. fluorescens was studied with O218 and H2O18 as tracers. 6-Hydroxy-nicotinic acid contained the tracer when the source of O18 was water, but not when it was gaseous oxygen. It is concluded that the oxygen of the hydroxyl group is derived from water. The results are discussed in relation to biological hydroxylation mechanisms. Keywords
