CYCLIC CHANGES IN THE EXTERIORIZED UTERUS

Abstract
Subsequent to the formation of a permanent utero-abdominal fistula in 2 monkeys there occurred a rhythmic extrusion and evagination of the uterine fundus with exposure of the endometrium. This excursion of the uterus when correlated with the appearance of vaginal bleeding coincided roughly with the latter half of the cycle, but usually there was an interval of 1-3 da. before bleeding. About the middle of the cycle the skin which had closed over the entrance to the uterus ruptured and the uterus slowly pushed out taking 3 or 4 da. to reach full extrusion. The return of the uterus was abrupt. When secretory endometrium was obtained by curettage it was always at a time when the uterus was extruded. Interval endometrium was sometimes found during this phase, indicating that the uterine protrusion was independent of any change which could be attributed to the presence of a corpus luteum.
