Abstract
Air temperatures in nasal airway were accurately measured with a thermocouple made of fine copper and constantan wire, butt joined with silver solder and hammered flat to a ribbon 0.0005 inch thick. The junction was mounted in an aluminum radiation shield. Exptl. evaluation showed it registered true air temp. within 0.1 sec. at instantaneous flows exceeding 5 liters/nun. Air temp. tracings from the front, middle, and back of the nose were obtained from 18 resting men in the following ambient air temp. ranges: 23[degree] to 28% (warm), 5[degree] to 8% (cool), and -20[degree] to -31% (cold). Avg. minimal peak temps. from these tracings demonstrated that inspired air was rapidly warmed in its passage through the nose. At the back of the nose inspired warm ambient air reached 31.7[degree]C, cool air 30.0[degree]C, and cold air 25.4[degree]C. Avg. maximal temp. peaks there were 35.5[degree], 34.9[degree], and 31.9[degree]C at warm, cool and cold ambient temps., respectively. At the front of the nose avg. maximal expired air temp. peaks were 34.1[degree], 29.2[degree], and 26.2[degree]C under the same respective conditions.
