The Use and Misuse of Mathematical Symbolism

Abstract
This paper is written with the hope that it will cause some reaction and bring about some discussion among mathematics educators regarding the issues raised and the points of view expressed. The motivation for it came from discussions with colleagues while working on the Florida State Assessment Program. These discussions concerned whether or not something like that shown in figure I constitutes an appropriate multiple-choice test item. With today's excessive emphasis on assessment and accountability, millions of students across the United States are undoubtedly being asked to respond to such items.
