Abstract
THE accepted normal values for white blood cells in the peripheral blood as stated in the various medical textbooks are based on several studies of large groups of apparently normal persons.1 2 3 4 For various reasons the authors have utilized almost exclusively white populations in deriving these normal values.5 , 6 The possible existence of significant racial differences in "normal values" for these parameters has thus received little attention, in spite of the fact that such differences are known to exist in other peripheral blood measurements such as the erythrocyte count, and in situations directly affecting the white blood cells such as the incidence . . .
