Spectral measurement of timing jitter in gain-switched semiconductor lasers

Abstract
We calculate the power spectrum of a periodically gain-switched semiconductor laser having intrinsic timing jitter and pulse-energy fluctuations that are uncorrelated from pulse to pulse. The results, in accord with measurements and numerical simulations, show that rms values of uncorrelated jitter can be determined with subpicosecond sensitivity from measured photocurrent spectra.Keywords
