Pitch Canker of Slash Pine in Florida

Abstract
Pitch canker is reducing growth and deforming stems of large numbers of planted slash pines (Pinus elliottii Englem. var. elliottii) in Florida. In fall, needles on cankered shoots turn yellow to reddish. New shoots often wilt and die the following spring because the pitch-soaked cankers have girdled the branches. Controls have not yet been developed. The fungus has been identified both as Fusarium lateritium (Nees) emend. Synder & Hansen f. sp. pini and as F. moniliforme var. subglutinans Wr. & Rienk.
