Abstract
PREMATURELY born children of low birth weight have been reported to lag in physical development when compared either to full-term infants or to prematurely born children of higher birth weight.1-6 Cherry et al7 reported on weight, height, and head measurements during the first year of life of normal prematurely born Negro infants divided into weight groups of 1,001-1,500 gm and 1,501-2,000 gm. The children of lower birth weight were shorter and less heavy one year after birth. Furthermore, these children were shorter than full-term Negro children studied by Scott.8 Drillien9 found that children of higher birth weight tended to maintain height and weight advantages at 2 years of age although the differences in height or weight between full-term and premature children or among groups of prematurely born children were found not to be significant.
