Attitudes of Older and Middle-Aged Persons Toward Mental Health Intervention

Abstract
Middle-aged and older adults were equally likely to perceive abnormal behavior in vignettes as reflecting serious psychological problems and as indicating needs for professional intervention. Lower social class respondents were more likely to perceive severe psychological problems than middle class respondents. In regard to treatment needs, the older adults were less likely to choose outpatient treatment as an appropriate means of treating psychological problems. Also, they were less likely to have had previous exposure to psychological services.
