Repression and induction of arylsulphatase synthesis in Aerobacter aerogenes

Abstract
Aerobacter aerogenes, ATCC-9621, synthesized arylsulfatase when grown on media containing methionine, taurine, cysteate or choline-sulfate as the S source; but enzyme synthesis was repressed when sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate, cysteine-S-sulfonate or cysteine was present as the sole S source or in addition to taurine or methionine. The addition of tyramine to the medium relieved the repression of arylsulfatase synthesis. The repressor S sources were utilized for cysteine synthesis in preference to or simultaneous with, Na2SO3 [S35] supplied at the same time, whereas the non-repressor S sources did not significantly affect the utilization of sulfate.
