Abstract
The energy expenditure and oxygen handling efficiency of nonanemic and anemic primary schoolchildren was measured at school and at play in an isolated jungle fishing village before and after iron therapy. Typical daily energy expenditure was not dependent on the degree of anemia. Standardized tests of oxygen handling efficiency showed that 88% of the variations in energy expenditure could be accounted for by multiple regressions of heart rate, weight, and hemoglobin. Oxygen handling efficiency was affected adversely by abnormal hemoglobin levels. Keywords
