Abstract
A new skeletonization algorithm called the safe-point thinning algorithm (SPTA) is proposed that is suitable for binary patterns. The SPTA is informally explained and is also defined in a formal algorithmic manner. The experimental performance of the SPTA is compared with 14 other skeletonization algorithms that have been proposed by other researchers. Results show that SPTA is the fastest and that it produces skeletons of good quality.Keywords
