Abstract
This study uses a specially‐developed measure of union participation in economic policy‐making to classify and compare the historical experiences of Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland between 1970 and 1992. Among its findings are that such participation has remained high throughout this period, with no perceptible trend downwards over time, and that there is a clear link to Left participation in government. It is concluded that in these five countries at least, union participation in economic decision‐making is here to stay.
