CELL POPULATION KINETICS IN THE COLON OF THE MOUSE*

Abstract
Measurements were made of epithelial cell proliferation and migration in normal mouse colon after injection of H thymidine and microautoradiography. The findings revealed for the majority of epithelial cells a generation time of 16 hours. This was made up of a DNA synthesis (S phase) of about 6.5 hours, G 2 and mitosis phases of 1.5 hours and a G 1 phase of about 8 hours. Although the majority of cells underwent mitosis shortly after labeling, some epithelial cells did not follow the pattern of proliferation kinetics described for the majority of cells. One week after labeling, some of these ceils appeared to have divided only once and some not at all.
