Self-Expanding versus Balloon-Mounted Stent-Assisted Recanalization of Embolic Occlusion: An In Vivo Study

Abstract
Despite advances in mechanical thrombolysis for acute stroke, recanalization rates remain approximately 50 to 60%. Higher rates have been achieved in peripheral and coronary vessels with stenting. Technological advances have allowed the safe delivery of stents into the intracranial circulation. We developed an in vivo model to assess recanalization rates after stenting of vessels acutely occluded with clot emboli. Self-expanding or balloon-mounted stents in canine vessels measuring 2 to 3.5 mm were evaluated.
