The Breeding of Anopheles Gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) in Rice Fields in The Kisumu Area of Kenya

Abstract
Light traps were used to sample the emerging adult populations of ANOPHELES GAMBIAE through 3 complete cycles of rice cultivation. In the 1st crop adults were taken in large numbers following transplanting of young rice from nursery areas to main fields. When the rice height reached 100 cm, catches fell markedly. In the 2nd and 3rd crops, transplanting again stimulated the breeding of An. gambiae , and insecticidal sprays used to control the rice pest stem borer ( Maliarpha separatella ) resulted in considerable mosquito adult emergence later in the crop cycle. It was concluded that 3 factors influenced the breeding of An. gambiae in rice fields: water depth, rice height, and predation.
