Abstract
The adrenal glands of the rat do not appear to be necessary for development of hypertension induced by administration of hypertonic NaCl solution as drinking fluid. Systolic blood pressures of these rats became elevated within 3 to 8 weeks after treatment began. The lowest concentration of salt solution which significantly elevated blood pressure was 1.75%. Renal hypertrophy accompanied the elevated blood pressure in most cases and cardiac hypertrophy in some cases. The life span of the adrenalectomized rats receiving hypertonic salt solution to drink was less than that of untreated adrenalectomized rats. Keywords
