Abstract
The periodicities that some wavefields exhibit in free propagation are described using the paraxial propagation properties of the Wigner distribution function. This allows the Talbot effect to be discussed, and the Lau effect to be treated in terms of a ray-picture description. The transmission of light in a planar, dielectric waveguide is also considered. Keywords
