Abstract
Character Quality is discussed with particular reference to recognition systems employing a mapping on to a binary matrix. Examples of print and mappings are discussed together with the criteria affecting the parameters of an adequate scanning system. The constraints which have been considered are primarily those which limit the performance of a Flying Spot Scanner, but similar considerations would apply to other forms of sensing. Keywords
