Abstract
Using water as a lubricant, experiments were made with a tilting-pad thrust bearing. It was found that the friction torque increased abnormally when the rubbing speed exceeded what appeared to be a critical value. This abnormal torque indicated the possible effect of turbulence in the hydrodynamic film between the runner and pads. An analysis was made of experimental data based on the work of G. I. Taylor. These data show the effect on friction torque of the variables of fluid viscosity and sliding speed for both laminar and turbulent film conditions. Keywords
