Cells Find Destiny Though Merger

Abstract
A year ago, scientists were set abuzz by two reports that adult stem cells in test tubes alter their identities not by reprogramming to fit into their new environment but by fusing with host cells. Now two teams have come up with the first evidence in living animals that such cells can metamorphose by fusion. The finding suggests that it might be more difficult than some hope to develop therapies using adult stem cells.
