Abstract
Continuum emission intensities on the extreme wings of the Tl resonance lines due to noble gas perturbers have been measured as a function of gas temperature. These spectra, due to the B 2Σ1/2−X1/2, B 2Σ1/2−X3/2, and B 2Σ1/2−A1/2 bands, are interpreted with the classical Franck–Condon principle to yield estimates of the B 2Σ1/2, A1/2, X3/2, and X1/2 potentials of Tl–noble gas molecules. As has been noted qualitatively in matrix isolation studies, the Group III elements form unusually stable diatomic bonds with the ’’inert’’ gases, e.g., we find Tl–Xe bound by ∼300 cm−1. The Tl–Xe system is an interesting visible, excimer laser candidate, as the molecular spectra extend very far into the red wings of the resonance lines. Keywords
