Abstract
The pressure induced II to IV phase transition in KNO3 has been studied by Raman scattering. In the antiferro-electric phase II, the translational shear modes show larger pressure coefficients than the NO− 3 rotational vibrations, which were found to be weakly coupled at 295 K. In phase IV a drastic change in the potential around NO3 − sites occurs and the rotational modes show sizable pressure coefficients. The Raman data suggest that phase IV has a structure of relatively low symmetry. Keywords
