Effect of Fasting on Bilirubin Metabolism

Abstract
PLASMA unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) levels increase within the first two days of restricted dietary intake or fasting. As concluded by Felsher, Rickard and Redeker in this issue of the Journal, elevation of plasma UCB during a markedly reduced caloric intake is a "normal" response. Barrett1 also reported approximately twofold increases in plasma total bilirubin levels of normal subjects during a two-day fast. We have observed a threefold increase in the mean plasma bilirubin level for a group of 14 male volunteers after five days of less than 550 K calories per day in a thermally stressful environment.Reduced dietary . . .
