Abstract
Reports are made on 145 cases of epistaxis in persons aged over 70 years, who had been treated as in-patients at the 2nd ENT Clinic of Vienna within a period of 5 years. The therapeutic measures (strip tamponage, Spongostan tamponage, cauterization) are indicated and the results are discussed. The main causes of bleeding in this age group are arteriosclerosis and hypertension; other causes are rare. The statistical distribution of the bleeding onset according to the time of day and season yields an increased incidence of epistaxis at night, and in spring and autumn. In old age epistaxis appears to be partial disease within the compass of srteriosclerosis and hypertension.
