Inflammation and Tissue Injury II. Local Release of Lysosomal Enzymes During Mixed Bacterial Infection in the Skin of Rabbits.

Abstract
Viable and heat-killed human dento-gingival bacterial plaque was injected intra-dermally in normal rabbits and animals made leukopenic by nitrogen mustard. The skin lesions, as well as uninoculated skin, was excised and incubated in tissue culture medium in order to elute any free enzymes from the tissues. After filtration, the filtrates were assayed for acid protease, /[beta]-glucuronidase and acid phosphatase activity. There was an increase in lysosomal enzyme activity in normal animals, but, in general, not from leukUKopenic rabbits. Tissue injury may be mediated by the release of lysosomal enzymes from degenerating PMN [polymorphonuclear]-leukocytes.
