Abstract
A method for the analysis of carbon monoxide in air is described, with photometric determination of the colour change in an indicator tube. Calibrations are only needed infrequently and the precision is great in the range 0.1 to 20 ppm. Only a few hundred ml of gas is needed for an analysis. This method is used for the analysis of gas, with which a small amount of blood had equilibrated. By choosing the volumes of blood and gas, an equilibrium can be obtained where practically all the CO is contained in the gas phase. Thus the CO content of the blood is determined. This method was used for the determination of the CO capacity of blood. Close correlation was obtained between the O2 capacity and the optical density of diluted, hemolyzed blood. Keywords
